Inn at Little Washington Engagement Photos | Complete Guide


The Inn at Little Washington has always felt a little different to me because I knew the property long before I ever photographed a couple there.


I worked at The Inn my senior year in high school, starting as a dishwasher and later moving up to a prep cook for their morning service before I left to join the Marine Corps. I spent a lot of time on that property at a pretty formative age, working alongside people operating at an incredibly high level and getting an early look at the amount of care, discipline, and creativity that goes into making a place like The Inn feel so special.


Years later, getting to come back as a photographer has been a really meaningful full-circle experience.

Now, instead of showing up before sunrise to prep for service, I get to walk the grounds with couples who may be experiencing The Inn for the first time, sometimes for an engagement session, sometimes for a proposal, and often before one of the most memorable dinners they’ll ever have. Being able to bring my own creativity back to a place that shaped part of my early working life is a big reason I still get excited every time I photograph there.

It also happens to be one of the best engagement photo locations in Virginia.



The property gives us an unusually wide range of settings: formal gardens, open countryside, shaded pines, rustic fence lines, and the architecture of The Inn itself. If you’re planning engagement photos here, I generally recommend starting about 1.5 to 2 hours before sunset. That gives us enough time to explore the property naturally while saving the more open locations for the softer evening light.

My Favorite Engagement Photo Route Around The Inn


I’ve developed a pretty reliable route through The Inn that gives couples plenty of variety while following the best evening light across the property:



  • Cutting Garden - a colorful, relaxed place to start while the sun is still a little stronger.
  • Pines & Livestock Fence - great for filtered light, backlighting, and a more natural Virginia countryside feel.
  • Garden of Scents - a more manicured and romantic setting as the light begins to soften.
  • Field of Dreams - one of my favorite places to photograph as we get closer to golden hour.
  • Front of The Inn - the classic Inn at Little Washington photograph and a perfect place to finish before dinner.


The route isn’t set in stone. I’ll adjust it based on the season, cloud cover, and where the light looks best that evening. Generally, though, starting around 1.5 hours before sunset lets us use the gardens and trees while the sun is stronger, then move into the open field and front of The Inn once the light becomes softer and more flattering.


The Cutting Garden


The Cutting Garden is one of the most popular engagement and proposal locations at The Inn at Little Washington, and for good reason. It gives you a lot of visual variety in a relatively small space and feels immediately romantic without needing much setup. The garden itself is framed by beautiful hedges, seasonal flowers, and a central fountain, which gives us plenty of options for both wider environmental portraits and tighter, more intimate photos.



Just before the garden is one of my favorite secondary areas: the ivy-covered silo and stone tile path. It adds a completely different texture from the flowers and greenery, so we can create a second look without really leaving the area. Because of that combination, the Cutting Garden is often where I begin engagement sessions and where many surprise proposals take place. It gives couples a beautiful, recognizable setting while still offering enough variety to keep the photos from feeling repetitive.


2026 Update: The Inn is currently working on a new addition to the property, and portions of the area behind the Cutting Garden are under construction. The garden itself is still accessible and remains beautiful for engagement photos and proposals.

The Pines & Livestock Fence


Near the back of the Field of Dreams, a newer trail now loops around the pond and livestock area, opening up a few of my favorite quieter spots on the property. One of the best is a small pine area that can look almost magical when the sun is in the right position. The trees form a natural archway, and later in the afternoon the light can pour through from behind, creating beautiful backlit portraits and some really striking silhouettes. It feels much more secluded than some of the formal gardens, which makes it a great place for softer, more intimate photos.


Directly beside the pines is a long stretch of livestock fence with the Blue Ridge Mountains behind it. I love this area because it gives couples something natural to lean against or interact with, which helps the photos feel grounded and relaxed. It also adds a distinctly Virginia countryside look without feeling overly rustic or farm-like.

Together, the pines and fence line give us a completely different feel from the gardens and are usually one of my favorite stops before moving into the more open sections of the property.


Garden of Scents


The Garden of Scents is another elegant and intimate place for engagement photos at The Inn at Little Washington.

The enclosed garden works beautifully for both wide environmental portraits and closer, more intimate moments, whether I’m photographing the two of you together or creating a few individual portraits. The symmetry, pathways, gates, and landscaping give the space a very polished feel while still keeping everything soft and romantic.

The garden changes quite a bit throughout the year. Depending on the season, the gates can become wrapped in ivy, and during the summer the flowers can be incredibly full and voluminous, giving the entire space a lush, almost hidden-garden feeling.

Field of Dreams


Directly behind The Inn’s gift shop, the Field of Dreams opens up into a broad stretch of countryside with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. It is one of my favorite places to photograph later in the session, especially as we get closer to golden hour and the light starts to soften across the field. Mulch paths run through the property, which makes it easy to explore without having to walk directly through the grass. Those paths also create great leading lines for wider photographs and give us room for walking portraits, movement, and more environmental images that show off the scale of the landscape.



Closer to the gift shop are two beautiful archways that give us a completely different look. One is a classic white trellis, while the other is a more modern black archway. Both work beautifully for framed portraits and add some structure between the more open field photographs. There is also a tall hedge wall nearby that I love using for cleaner, more polished portraits. Altogether, the Field of Dreams gives us a mix of open landscapes, architectural details, and greenery, which makes it one of the most versatile stops on the property.


Front of The Inn


No engagement session at The Inn at Little Washington feels complete without the classic photograph in front of the property. The wide shot showing the iconic façade is always worth getting, especially for couples who want a photograph that immediately feels tied to The Inn. From there, I like to move in closer and use the draping banners and architectural details as softer background elements, letting them blur out behind you for a more intimate portrait.

My favorite way to finish most sessions, though, is with a photograph of the two of you walking into The Inn together.

After spending the evening exploring the gardens, fields, and grounds, it feels like a natural ending to the story, one last photograph as you head inside to enjoy what will hopefully will be a meal to remember.

How to Plan Your Engagement Session Around Dinner at The Inn


For most couples, I recommend scheduling engagement photos before dinner.

The biggest reason is the light. The grounds around The Inn are at their best in the final couple of hours before sunset, and starting earlier gives us time to move through the property. My engagement sessions at The Inn are typically around 60–70 minutes, which is enough time to photograph the main areas of the property without making the session feel rushed or overly long. If possible, I like to begin roughly 1.5 hours before sunset. That gives us a little flexibility with the light and also leaves time afterward for you to return to your room, freshen up, and head into dinner without feeling like you are racing the clock.


For example, if sunset is at 7:30 PM, a 5:45 or 6:00 PM session usually works beautifully. We can photograph for about an hour, finish as the light is getting especially soft, and still leave a comfortable buffer before an evening reservation.


What to Wear and the Best Seasons for Engagement Photos at The Inn



The Inn at Little Washington naturally lends itself to a slightly more elevated engagement session.

You certainly do not need to dress formally, but I generally recommend choosing clothing that feels polished enough to match the setting. For many couples, the easiest option is simply to wear what you are already planning to wear to dinner. A dress, jacket, suit, or more refined casual outfit tends to photograph beautifully against both the gardens and the architecture of The Inn.



For a 60–70 minute session, I usually prefer one strong outfit rather than spending time on an outfit change. The property already gives us so much variety that we can create very different photographs without changing clothes.

If you are wearing heels, I highly recommend bringing a comfortable pair of shoes for walking between locations. The grounds are very walkable, but we will be moving through mulch paths, gardens, fields, and uneven areas before switching back into your nicer shoes for photographs.


The season also has a big impact on how your engagement photos will feel.

  • SPRING brings fresh greenery, softer colors, and the gardens beginning to fill back in. It can be one of the prettiest times for couples who want a light, romantic look.
  • SUMMER is when the property tends to feel the most lush. The gardens are full, the foliage is rich, and areas like the Garden of Scents can become incredibly colorful and layered.
  • FALL gives the property a warmer, more textured feel. The surrounding Virginia countryside begins to change, and the combination of autumn tones, fields, and mountain views can be especially beautiful.
  • WINTER is more understated, but it can still photograph beautifully. The architecture becomes more prominent, the property feels quieter, and there are enough evergreens throughout the grounds to keep plenty of color and texture in the background. Couples dressed for a winter dinner at The Inn can end up with a gallery that feels especially elegant and distinctive.



Having photographed the property throughout different times of year, I do not think there is one single "best" season. The better question is what kind of look do you want from your photos. Each season gives The Inn its own character.

The Inn is one of those locations I never get tired of photographing. Part of that comes from my own history with the property, but a large part of it is simply how much it gives us creatively. After photographing numerous engagement sessions, proposals and weddings here, I have learned how to move through the property efficiently, where the light tends to work best, and which locations pair together to create a gallery that feels varied rather than repetitive.
